Alderweireld had previously joined Saints on loan during Mitchell's time at St Mary's.
A statement on Tottenham's official website read: "The club can confirm that Paul Mitchell, head of recruitment, will be leaving the club at a future date to be mutually agreed." Chairman Daniel Levy said: "Mitch has been with us for two years and created a well staffed department and run our recruitment processes for the past two years.
"We understand and respect his wish to consider new avenues.
The priority right now is the final few weeks of the transfer window.
"I know that, whilst most of our business has been completed, Mitch is keen to ensure we start the season in the best position." Mitchell has been linked with a similar role at Premier League champions Leicester, who lost Steve Walsh to Everton earlier in the summer.
